I’m sure we all have days when we feel so overwhelmed with the tasks we have to do. But let’s not forget that we are in control on how we achieve a healthy and happy work-life balance. So, let me share how I work 57 hours a week, study for the board exams, run a blog, work on my passion products for my brand, manage an events company, handle the social media account for a client and do freelance work and still allot time to find a new house, travel and reward myself on a regular basis.
Avoid Distractions – During the day, be aware where you allocate your time. For me, I find myself checking my social media sites, even if I don’t need to. Try to dedicate certain hours during the day to check these and avoid getting distracted and focus on the task at hand.

Manage Every Minute of Your Time – If you manage your time, you’ll be able to meet deadlines to your clients, and avoid feeling burnout. It is better to finish tasks quickly so you can move to something that requires more of your time. For example, when there are breaks during the photo shoot, I make sure to answer emails or messages right away. Or complete the task the client asked me that day, to avoid a backlog. I make sure to also schedule “days off” where I do the things I like and spend time with the people I love. I work on my blog and freelance projects on weekdays and morning on weekends, and have down time on Friday and Saturday night and all day Sunday.

Outsource and Delegate – Last year, I thought I could do everything, from styling to shooting the content for my blog. And I became exhausted because when you’re just starting out, you’ll be a one man band. But when I thought my project that day would take long, I outsourced a photographer to shoot my work. I found that getting help allowed me to achieve more and come home earlier to get other tasks done. That’s a win-win situation, don’t you think?
Give Yourself a Break – It is crucial for our health to schedule downtime. Whenever we finish work, we have to learn to stop thinking subconsciously about it. Sign out of your emails at night, get a separate number to use for the business, and don’t talk about work with friends. After a busy week, I reward myself to a two-hour massage, or stay in and watch movie marathons. We should remember to value our rest, since this is the answer to having a happy work-life.

Organise, Organise, Organise – Be smart and prioritise what you do with your time, and get organised. You’ll spend less time looking where you placed that important file and spend more time doing productive tasks.

You can Say No – You have to learn when to say yes or no to a potential project. There are several instances when you think about what ifs, if you let this opportunity go. But I realised that if I constantly say yes and keep taking on projects than I can handle, I may end up damaging my name and brand if I fail to deliver on a deadline. I think it’s wise to always think how each project will benefit you, your portfolio and brand. Will it help grow your business? Will it improve your life and make you happy? Sometimes what’s best for you happen when you’re doing less.
